Tiger Wildlife Art Using Derwent Lightfast and Caran d'Ache Luminance
Tiger Wildlife Art Using Derwent Lightfast and Caran d'Ache Luminance
In between reviews, I like to try and do an art project just for myself, when I am doing art to help demonstrate a product I am reviewing, I don’t always really feel in the mood to draw or paint that particular subject. However, ever now and then I really get the bug to draw and use the art products that I am so incredibly blessed and fortunate to have.
On this occasion I wanted to use just colored pencils, I couldn’t decided between my Derwent Lightfast and Caran d’Ache Luminance, so I thought why not use them both. On this occasion I used a paper I have been trying and that is the Fabriano Artistico Extra White 140lb Hot Pressed Watercolor Paper, which I have to say I was really impressed with. There is no doubt that the combination of pencils and high quality paper used for this piece helped immensely in providing such an outcome.
Of every single drawing or painting I have completed, this is the one I am most impressed with and proud of. I knew midway through the drawing that everything was coming together as best as I could get it. The Derwent Lightfast and Caran d’Ache Luminance worked together as if they were actually made to work in conjunction with one and other. I never use odourless mineral spirits and very rarely use blending pencils, however on this occasion I used the Caran d’Ache blender on the background, this tool is a must have for colored pencil artists.
This is not a review so to speak, more a look at two of the finest colored pencil brands in the world, working in harmony. I have been toying with the notion of creating tutorials as I have been getting requests to do this, so I have decided to turn this into a tutorial with voiceover instructions. I know this is perhaps not the best drawing to start tutorials on, however, as and when more tutorials are created they will vary in difficulty. When I set out drawing this image I did not do so with the intent of creating a tutorial, but I think for a few colored pencil artists this might be an interesting tutorial. It is also worth mentioning that I have never created teaching material of any kind in a civilian capacity so I will of course do my best. As soon as the tutorial is ready I will of course inform you all.
If you are interested in the tutorial version of this drawing, while you wait I have uploaded a speed drawing of the process. The drawing in total took just over 25 hours during the last week or two, ordinarily I shy away from backgrounds however on this one I knew I needed a background of some description so I kept it as simple as I could and was happy enough with the outcome.
Also, if you would like to know more about these two amazing pencils individually click on the respective links to see my review on each pencil and from there you can find other links to related content. I think what with everything that happened to our daughter a few weeks ago, I had not been focused on submitting reviews and so tried to recenter myself by throwing myself into a drawing I knew would challenge everything I have learnt in the past four years, give or take. On that subject I would like to say thank you all so much for your wonderfully kind words and sentiments aimed at our daughter Amelia.
