Superman Christopher Reeves
Superman Christopher Reeves
Over Christmas I took two weeks off doing reviews but I couldn’t take anytime off drawing and so I felt the need to get some color down onto paper and try to do another FanArt piece. A good friend of mine and neighbour is a huge fan of the old Christopher Reeves Superman from the DC Universe.
I didn’t want to just do a drawing of Superman standing and so I tried to mix the drawing up a bit and one of the things that I have enjoyed doing lately is combining color with graphite. I have seen many other artists do this concept and do it well and so I thought I would give it another go.
This work was completed on Strathmore 500 Series Bristol Plate which is a smooth surface and 100% cotton, so it works really well with the markers and colored pencil combined. In this drawing I used Copic Markers and a few Arrtx Markers as well for the detail.
Along with the markers I used Caran d’Ache Luminance Colored Pencils, Faber Castell Polychromos, a few Prismacolor Premier. Ordinarily it doesn’t make sense to use Prismacolor along with the other two pencils only because of the lightfast differences, however as this was not a commission or anything like that, all I was interested in was color and all three pencils provide that in spades.
To contrast the piece I completed the portrait in graphite and for this piece I used the Caran d’Ache Grafwood Graphite range with a few Staedtler Mars Lumograph Black. I find doing human portraits in graphite easier, I think graphite is a more forgiving medium and can be manipulated better helping the portrait look softer where appropriate.
