Conte a Paris Pastel Pencil Art

Conté à Paris Pastel Pencil Art

I created this piece of art as part of my review for the Conté à Paris Pastel Pencils. I used some Unison Soft Pastels for the background, backgrounds can be done using pastel pencils but it is much easier and faster using pastel sticks or blocks for larger areas. However, as a side note, with Pastel sticks and blocks, you tend to find that the pigment strength is much greater in such pastels over that of pastel pencils.

The paper I used was Clairefontaine PastelMat, for me personally, when I very first started out trying pastels, I used Ingres Pastel paper and I just found this paper so difficult to work with. I personally didn’t find I was able to layer the pastels much and just always felt that the second I lifted the artwork upright, all the pastel would simply fall off the paper. Because of this process, I was put off using pastels for the longest time, that was until I tried PastelMat.

Originally I only purchased PastelMat to use along with the Brush And Pencil kit as for this kit to blend correctly, a rougher surface such as PastelMat or UART Sanded paper is required. Once I used the paper for the Brush and Pencil review, I immediately got the pastels out and started looking for a reference image to paint. I instantly got better results with my pastels and the process suddenly became fun as opposed to before with the Ingres. It’s important to note that I am not suggesting the Ingres is bad paper, that is just not the case, there are some amazing pastel artists who love Ingres paper, Colin Bradley being one such artist and his work is phenomenal. For me personally, I just found the PastelMat easier to work with.

As always, I have provided a fully detailed written review of the Conté à Paris Pastel Pencils which you can read by clicking the link, you can also watch my YouTube video review of the Pastel Pencils or you can watch my speed drawing of this painting which can help demonstrate the product on a different level.
