Meg And Milo
I think of all the drawings I have completed thus far, this one has to be my most special and I don’t mean in terms of results but more sentimental value. My Mother and Father In Law Brian and Diane own both of these beautiful dogs.
Meg is the Black one and is the little girl and Milo is of course the Blue merl a little boy. Unfortunately Meg passed away in September 2020 and my Mother and Father in Law were both devastated and so they asked me almost immediately if I would be able to complete a drawing of them both.
Not wanting to let them down I reluctantly agreed and I say reluctantly because I knew just how much emotion was attached to both Meg and Milo and so therefore the drawing and I also knew that no matter how good or bad the final drawing, my Mother and Father In Law would love it.
But as all you artists out there know, you don’t want people to say they love your work because they have hearts of gold and would never in a million years intentionally offend you, you want to see the joy of such intimate work on their faces and to be honest, I knew my wife Victoria could tell if they liked the drawing or not when it was complete.
Regardless I really wanted to do my very best but all the photos that they provided to me were really terrible to say the least, out of focus and pixelated, so I wasn’t off to a fantastic start with regards to reference images. I did have one advantage in that I knew the dogs personally and so I could inject some of my own memories into the drawing.
I wanted to use the very best products I had for this piece and so I completed the drawing on 100% Cotton Strathmore 500 Series Bristol Plate paper, my absolute favourite paper in the world for so much of my work.the pencils that I used was the Caran d’Ache Luminance, Derwent Lightfast and Caran d’Ache Pablo, all pencils excellent lightfast ratings and the most beautiful pigments.
Although this is a very personal drawing to me, I still thought I would love to share it with the people I feel have embraced me as an artist, encouraged me every step of the way and become like a second branch of family to me, some of you practically are family. You all mean so much to me, thank you all for being such amazing friends.
As you can see from the image below my wife actually framed the drawing in line with my Mother and Father In Laws living room which is where the drawing has been hung. If you would like to watch the drawing come to life follow the link to the speed drawing over on The Art Gear Guide YouTube Channel
